If you have ever planned an overseas trip and been inspired to paint, but the thought of packing oil paints and canvases seemed daunting or prohibitive, Stacy Kamin has the solution.
For years Stacy has been traveling to Europe armed only with a sketchbook, ink pen and a small travel watercolor kit. There she does sketches and takes photos as reference material so that once she returns to her studio, she can recreate these visual ideas in a larger format, and all done while traveling light.
Now that she has her process down to a science, she can share her supplies and ways of working so that you too can respond artistically to your surroundings even when you travel. She will do demonstrations to explain her process as well as help you transform provided reference material into paintings of your own.
In this class you will learn how to compose a painting from sketches and pictures, as well as how to decide what information is relevant to include. This class will focus on creating a unique painting inspired by Stacy’s own beautiful sketches and photos. if time permits, she will help students decide what reference material would make a beautiful painting of their own and perhaps start that painting. But regardless of time, Stacy will guide students on how to use their reference material to create unique compositions once they’ve returned to their own studios.
Since this is a shorter class, you will learn how to use pictures and sketches to create a painting as practice for work you’ll do on a future trip. You will learn what to look for when choosing a scene so that the result will depict a simple visual idea.
This is a not-to-be-missed class for anyone contemplating traveling with the idea of gathering material to produce larger works back in your studio, and for someone who wants to travel light.
*There will be demonstrations and daily individual critiques; all levels are welcome

In this oil painting portrait workshop we will examine the classic portrait to understand how painting works. Since oil painting requires a different language than drawing, Stacy will help you understand their important differences.
In this class you will explore the very specific language of painting and how to make translations from reality into paint. You will be introduced to the tools to accomplish this: color temperature, edges, paint quality and composition.
If you have felt afraid of using oils, Stacy is the perfect instructor to help you overcome your fears and help you achieve beautiful brushwork in your paintings. Informed by her many years of teaching experience here in the United States and abroad, you will learn why painting has been one of the most beloved mediums for artists over the centuries.
You will paint from live models every day and there will be two portrait demonstrations and individual instruction throughout the week.
Instructor: Stacy Kamin
In this still life painting class, Stacy Kamin will teach you the necessary elements for making a painting strong and painterly. She will discuss how to organize a palette, how to mix color and how to achieve color harmony while learning about values and color temperature. Stacy will help you learn how to make beautiful brushstrokes, which will increase your confidence as a painter. She will teach you how to create form, paint light, shadows and planes, and all while learning about hard and soft edges. Stacy will show you how to set up a still life that is guided by a visual idea. She will demonstrate how to paint an idea instead of just painting a collection of unrelated objects. With her warm, engaging personality, Stacy will simplify how you think about painting and make becoming an artist seem possible!
